A Mid-Century Female Modernist Artist in Montana

Marge was heavily involved in the art and social scene in Missoula. She studied under famous ceramicists Rudy Autio and Peter Voulkos. She was contemporaries with other female modernist artists in Montana, like Jessie Wilber and Frances Senska. Her art is included in private and public collections in the Middle East and the United States. Marge had one-person invitation shows at the Hockaday Museum in Kalispell, Montana, and Reeder’s Alley in Helena. She was an active member of the Montana Institute of the Arts and taught students at Missoula County High School and adults in the community.

The later years

In addition to the arts, Marge was an active member of the greater Missoula community. She served as president of the local chapter of the Sons of Norway for decades, taught art at the senior citizen’s center, and was a regular finalist for bread and pastry competitions at the Missoula County Fair.

Marge passed away peacefully on December 3, 2003, at the age of 85 years old surrounded by her children. She left behind a legacy of art work as well as a treasure trove of infamous stories of her presence and influence.
